The Avon Historical Society Selected as a Big Y Community Bag Program Beneficiary
The Avon Historical Society has been selected as a Big Y Community Bag Program Beneficiary for the month of July 2023.
The Big Y Community Bag Program, which launched in January 2019, is a reusable bag program that facilitates community support with the goal to make a difference in the communities where shoppers live and work. The Avon Historical Society was selected as the July 2023 beneficiary of the program by store leadership at the Big Y located at 255 West Main Street, (Route 44), Avon. The Society will receive a $1 donation every time the $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at this location during July unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag.
“The timing on this could not be more perfect,” said Terri Wilson, President of the Avon Historical Society. “We are in the midst of renovating Schoolhouse No. 3 at 8 East Main Street into the new Avon History Museum, slated to open in 2024! Shoppers can see the exterior renovations expected to begin at the end of June. The schoolhouse, the Town of Avon’s oldest public building, is 200 years old this year and will transform into a modern museum of Avon’s history. Included will be a section devoted to the 2019 discovery of the Brian D. Jones Paleoindian site under the Old Farms Road bridge. All proceeds from this community bag program will be directed to funding the interior installation of new exhibits in the museum. And, coincidentally, 2024 is the 50th anniversary of the Avon Historical Society. So having this corporate support in the community is doubly important and we thank the management of Big Y in Avon for selecting us.”
