BOOKS: Avon, Connecticut, An Historical Story by Mary-Frances L. MacKie
(Hardcover
- 1988) 322 pages- $22.00 This is perhaps one of America’s most interesting collections of stories about the many people who helped to build Avon, from the earliest settlers to the near present. You are in for some compelling reading. One of my favorite stories from the book is of Avon’s “first resident,” John Hart, moving up from Farmington to what was then Northington (the old name for Avon). Mary-Frances, an extremely gifted story teller, has managed to wrap these many stories together into an easy-to-read narrative. Needless to say, if your family has been in the area for a while, chances are, they are mentioned in this book!

Avon - Images of America by Nora O. Howard - Town Historian (Paperback - 2000) 128 pages - $20.00 Nora provides context and understanding to hundreds of photographs from Avon’s numerous collections beginning circa 1900, just as photography was becoming a powerful means of storytelling. There is a certain, “Back from the Future” feel to the book. As you drive along Route 44 today, for example, you can compare what the scene was like a hundred years ago. It is striking to see how former generations perceived of trees as very large weeds and took down pretty much every one of them! Another interesting chapter is the collection of classroom photos from way back. One of your relatives may very likely be featured. If you do not already have a copy of this book on your shelf, this is your opportunity to locate signed copies for you and your loved ones. If you are still wondering about just how interesting this collection of photographs is.... Sadly, I used to have two copies of the book, loaned them out, and never saw them again!

Growing Up in Old Avon Center by Bill Goralski
(Paperback
– 1988)110 pages - $10.00 Have you read Bill Goralski’s magical narrative about growing up in Avon in the 1930’s and 40’s? Bill recounts various events and their impact on Avon, like his walk home from school during the Hurricane of ’38, which took down Avon Congregational’s Steeple, or the Spring of ’41, when some misguided hooligan nearly blew up Ensign Bickford! Who knew? You won’t believe how they caught the culprit. Bill’s entertaining prose is one of a kind, hard to put down, frankly. His passion for Avon lifts off the page. Every copy sold is signed by the Author.

A is for Avon by Jan Brennan and 23 Student Writers (Paperback – 2009) 46 pages - $10.00 Jan Brennan, Leo Brennan Jr., and 23 Student Writers, all notably mentioned, have created a 2009 Edition for a new generation. Longer term locals may remember the 1979 Edition. Jan Brennan, Leo and her Students have updated the work for contemporary readers. For those of you who may have missed the original version from way back in 1979, the work highlights many of Avon's unique features and developments alphabetically. Jan Brennan has created a unique educational tool, developed and published by and for students, a concept that could be applied locally throughout the nation. How many of us are aware of how our local communities have evolved into what they are today? As an example, who knew that a Native American Tribe known as the "Tunxis-Sepus (translated as the "Crooked Little River" Tribe)" lived here until the early 18th Century? The book also includes a drivable map that points out the many notable sites mentioned. This unique work represents a one-of-a-kind local snapshot in time, a thoughtful gift item for both locals and their far-removed significant others. Avon Historical Society has a limited number of reproductions available at the Living Museum, Pine Grove Schoolhouse, and Heublein Tower, as well as through our Online Gift Shop.
